Light, Temperature and Latitude

Wow...thanks everyone for your feedback, so I'll post again now...

I'll let you know about the light...when we arrived on August 9th the sun was setting around 11:30pm and rising around 3:30 or 4am. These days the sun sets around 8:30pm and rises around 5:30am. The light changes fast and by the end of the month the sun will set around 6:20pm and rise around 7am. Here is a pic of the Bay from yesterday when my friend Jennifer Roop (yes...the Jenn Roop from Berwick) took me on an ATV ride to the "whale bones".

And this is a picture of the "whale bones". They are bones of two Bowhead whales. Repulse Bay has been fortunate to get tags for  Bowheads the past few years. They catch one and bring it to shore and clean the whale to feed families. They eat the blubber of the whale called muktaq. I'm sure I'll be trying some soon!

The temperature has been up and down. When we arrived the days were beautiful, reaching temperatures in the 20's, but it quickly became cloudy and actually rainy. The rain is helpful to keep the dust down. There are no paved roads, just dust and dirt. There are some awesome winds here because there are no trees to stop it, so there was a windy day last week and the ice blew into the bay from the open sea (last year's sea ice).

Repulse Bay is one of only four communities in the world that is actually on the Arctic Circle! 66 degrees latitude. We are above the tree line (which means no trees). This is the marker in the town...

Stay tuned for more adventures with Arctic Cat!
